Ever heard of the term prefetching? No? Ok then here's news for
you! Google in a growing spree to satisfy the searcher's soul
has introduced a feature called prefetching which tends to
request your web browser to download the first webpage in their
SERP without the user even knowing of it. The logic you ask?
Well the logic here is to give the searcher faster access to the
most relevent webpage. In this case the first website in the
google serp. When you visit a page using firefox or mozilla (the
two browsers that support this feature) google requests the
browser to download the first search engine result immediately.
So when you click on the webpage it loads almost immediately
saving much of your time. Don't like the idea? Well, then you
can utilize the option of turning prefetching off. If you are a
firefoxer Just type 'about:config' in your address bar, go to
'network.prefetch-next' and set value to 'false'. Or check out
this link if you are
using Mozilla.
Google asserts that this feature gets automatically enabled only
when it is sure that the user will click on the first result.
Although it is humble enough to accept that they cannot be 100%
correct at all times. This means the next time you look-up
something over google using a firefox or mozilla, your browser
is likely to end up caching webpages you haven't even visited.
Found cookies of some unvisited websites recently? Well you have
been prefetched!!
